The decoration is very nice and classy.
It was used for individual portions of soup or gruel that could be drunk without using a spoon. French medieval examples, in pewter, are known; they were very popular in France from the 17th century to the end of the ancien r?gime; they are often engraved with armorials and have decorative handles, rims and finials (e.g. silver ?cuelle and stand by Louis Landes, 1789; New York, Met.; see FRANCE, fig. 78). Some 17th- and 18th-century examples survive in England, Canada and the USA, although in these countries the PORRINGER was more common.
